End of Year Sports Round Up 2025

It has been another great term for our sports teams taking part in the +Active Enrichment programme, as well as individual athletes competing outside of college!

Football

Men’s 1st team – Seb Jeffries

The Men's 1st team had a fantastic season, improving from last year and giving some special performances. Highlights:

Surrey Sixth Form League Champions: The Boys won the Surrey Sixth Form League on the last game of the season, just beating Glyn School by 1 point in a closely fought league.

English Colleges FA National Knockout Cup: The boys made it to the semi-finals of this prestigious competition, narrowly losing to the eventual winners. The journey to the semi-finals was not an easy one, especially being drawn against last years finalists Itchen in the second round, and coming back from 3-1 down to win the game.

Season record: Over the course of the season, the team played a total of 18 matches, achieving an impressive record of 14 wins, 1 draw, and only 3 losses.

The Boys were fantastic all year - The upper 6th players will in-particular be missed as they progress on to their choices after College. We look forward to going again in September.

Surrey Sixth Form League Position: 1st  overall and National Semi-Finalists

Men’s 2nd team - Jez Ingram

The Men’s 2nd Team finished mid table this season within a very competitive league. During the season there were some really good results beating Esher away and two very close games against the winners of the league 3 Rivers Academy home & away losing 2-0 and 2-1. We also had 2 excited draws against SJB, with equalising goals coming in the final minute in both games. Team 2 also made the SSFL League Cup Final against Gordons 1st Team but missed out on a trophy losing 3-1 on the day. Players to look out for next season will be, Tom Christmas, James Berry & Ethan Knight who have shown great attitude and commitment towards college football at Godalming.

Surrey Sixth Form Leagues Position: 5th  overall

Men’s 3rd team – Kevin Broad

3rd team men's football: The 3rds had a really competitive fight in a tough division and found themselves down at the wrong end of the table at the season's close. Despite this, a home 3-2 victory over Esher was the highlight of the year featuring Jake Picken's unstoppable screamer and Seb Jones' excellent handling. Another very creditable performance away at Woking 1sts saw Luke Permain cause a stir with his first-half opener before injuries to Archie Bisley and Alfie Potts and that luck kind of summed up the season for the 3s whose points tally does not reflect their pluck and skill.

Surrey Sixth Form Leagues Position: 7th  overall

Men's Football 4th Team

A solid season for the 4th team under new coach Matt Hales. Remarkably, 4th team finished 4th in division 4 with 4 wins, 4 draws and 4 defeats! Some stand out performances from centre back partnership of Jude Russell and James Grant with Kyle Bradbury also showing excellent leadership skills in midfield. The team will be looking forward to pushing for promotion next season.

Surrey Sixth Form Leagues Position: 4th overall

Men's Football 5th Team

Godalming ran a 5th team for the first time and crowned the inaugural season with a league victory. In a highly competitive division, Godalming managed victories against every opponent in the table. Captain, Nathan Caddock led the team admirably from defence while ever-present Luke Bevan held the midfield together with highly disciplined performances. Tom James and Jonny Mangombe added the goals and creativity respectively which elevated the team to the top spot.

Surrey Sixth Form Leagues Position: 1st overall

Women’s Football – Sophie Hollis

It’s been an excellent season for the Godalming Girls, who finished second in the league, narrowly missing out on the title to a strong Woking side. The team has shown impressive development, building strong cohesion both on and off the pitch.

Captain Gracie has led with maturity and determination throughout the campaign, well supported by vice-captain Lilly. Their leadership has been instrumental in driving the team’s success and maintaining a positive team spirit.

In the cup competition, the girls put in a strong performance, reaching the quarter-finals before being narrowly defeated by Mount Kelly in a competitive match.

The coaching team has been full of praise for the players’ commitment, work ethic, and progress over the course of the season. It has been a rewarding year, with plenty to build on for the future!

Surrey Sixth Form League Position:

1st Team Football 3rd  overall

2nd Team Football 4th  overall

Hockey

The 2024/25 hockey season at Godalming College has been an outstanding one, filled with significant achievements across all teams. Both the men’s and women’s teams reached the quarter-finals of their respective National Cup competitions, while the mixed team also made it to the quarter-finals, demonstrating the college’s depth and skill in the sport.

In the Surrey 6th Form Leagues, both the men’s and women’s teams finished in second place, proving their consistency and competitiveness throughout the season. On the national stage, five players were selected for the English Colleges representative squads, an exceptional achievement reflecting their individual talent.

The men’s England Hockey T3 team reached the regional round, narrowly missing out on a spot at the national finals, while the women’s T3 team finished 3rd in their tournament, just missing out on a regional round appearance.

With plenty of goals scored and a positive, fun atmosphere throughout the season, Godalming College has had a fantastic year. The commitment, passion, and teamwork shown by all players have made this season one to remember, and the foundation has been set for continued success in the future.

Basketball - Stephen Twizere

This season was a fantastic experience for me as a first-year Head Coach at Godalming College. We had a strong mix of first years and returners, and the basketball culture was outstanding, with players showing real commitment and improvement across the board.

I’m proud of our record—despite four league losses, our approach was spot on, and with a few tweaks, we could have been champions. Many players stood out, making it hard to single out one individual.

Jamie Bunner became the heart of the team, bringing leadership and intensity despite not starting early on.

Fin Wood, initially left out of the squad, responded brilliantly and became our most consistent player, hitting clutch threes down the stretch.

Rafael Ferreira steadied us at point guard with his flair and creativity, and I believe he can be one of the league’s best next season.

Dan Halloran showed great versatility and resilience, igniting the crowd with highlight dunks.

George Lay, our captain, led from the front, setting standards and holding teammates accountable. Usually quiet, he embraced the role and earned MVP honors as our most dominant player.

Overall, a phenomenal year. With our strong core, we’re well-positioned for a title push and cup run next season.

Surrey Sixth Form League Position: 2nd  overall

Rugby

The rugby season started off with a visit to our friends at Worthing College on 17th September to play in a pre-season friendly.  The game was a great opportunity for lads to play against some good opposition and have an opportunity to get to know one another.  We ended up coming on the losing side of the result, but it was a good hit out at the start of the season.

Our first game of the AoC league campaign was against Peter Symonds, who are always a strong opposition.  The lads gelled together well from having the first 4 weeks of term to prepare, resulting in an emphatic win at home where the defensive effort was immense.  Lots of individual performances of note, including second year students Dan Cassidy and Freddie Webb and first year students Toby Ford and Tom Kemp.

The girls started their season off with a visit to Havant RFC to take part in the AoC participation festival against other local sixth form colleges.  The girls went with 6 players, who had never represented the college previously.  They played in some brilliant games of rugby, turning over opposition like Peter Symonds and Esher in some fantastic games of girls rugby.

The following week was a historic moment for the club as the boys were able to field a competitive 2nd XV for the first time.  We played against Reeds School in a friendly fixture, which was the first meeting between the two sides.  The game played out into a 24-24 draw in what was an excellent game of rugby with both sides containing vast majority of U17s in the side.

As the season rolled on, we entered the AoC Regional 7s tournament where all the Sixth Form colleges in the South East attended to compete for a spot at Nationals.  After a slow start against Barton Peveril, the boys rallied getting two wins to be joint second in the group, level on points with Barton Peveril.  A showdown with National Champions Peter Symonds ensued and a heart-breaking last-minute win from Peter Symonds resulted in the boys group stage exit from the tournament.  There were some excellent stand out performances, first year Raz Griffiths stepping up with his levels of performances by making his 1st XV debut.

Just before the Christmas break, the boys welcomed Farnborough Sixth Form to Ashtead Lane.  Farnborough had been running away with the league after some emphatic wins against Peter Symonds, where they won 100-0.  We knew we were in for a challenge with this game.  The boys managed to survive a late comeback from Farnborough and hold on for a brilliant victory, closing the gap between us and them at the top of the table.  A week later, we visited Farnborough for the return fixture in the league.  Determined to do well, Farnborough started fast and immediately put us on the backfoot from 2 early tries.  But the boys clawed it back to get with a score and after a knock on over the line from us, we couldn’t get on the score board with the spoils going to Farnborough.  In a brilliant advert for Age Grade rugby, both sides played both fixtures in the correct spirit and attitude.

After the Christmas break, the girls rugby side clustered with Esher College to give the girls some opportunities to play in 15-a-side fixtures against other colleges.  This turned out to be a great success, with the girls playing against Tiffin School and winning the game 74-0.  The girls earned the opportunity to play against Worthing College 2nd XV, who were excellent hosts and provided us with another opportunity to give girls an exposure to 15-a-side rugby.

In March, the boys and girls made the trip up to Richmond RFC to take part in the Surrey Schools 7s, a dress rehearsal for the world-famous Rosslyn Park 7s.  The boys played against some established schools, such as Gordon’s School and Eton, gaining a famous win against Eton in the first meeting between the two schools.  A meeting with reigning National Champions Millfield School awaited the boys in the quarter finals.  In an even affair for the first 10 minutes, Millfield showed their quality and started to pull away on the scoreboard, meaning the boys day was cut short.  They then went to cheer on the girls in their final, who had swept through the group stages playing against Tiffin and Graveney School in some excellent games.  There were some exceptional performances, especially from first year student Jess White, in the games on the group.  They then took on Marlborough College, who were looking strong.  The girls managed to get a fantastic win, to book a place in the cup final against Epsom College, an established rugby school.  The girls went toe to toe with a physical Epsom side, supported by the boys watching in the crowd.  In the final seconds of the game, first year student Fizz Wathern scored underneath the posts to give us the win in the first ever Surrey Schools 7s for the girls.  An unbelievable day for the programme and for the girls of both colleges!

The final game of the season for the boys was against Henley College 2nd XV.  Henley had been a difficult team to beat throughout the season, and their results demonstrated that.  When we welcomed them to Ashtead Lane, they brought a lot of energy to their play, which saw us go into the half time break 0-0, a first for many on the touchline to see a scoreline like that!  Henley were the first to break the deadlock at half time, scoring a converted try.  Patrick Sykes then nailed a penalty from 40-metres out to get us on the score board.  In the dying embers of the game, following an emphatic break from Sireli Namarua, Aaryan Sangha scored underneath the posts to give us an 8-7 win, which cemented our position as the 2nd best team in the league.

The 2nd XV finished the season in a commendable 4th place, taking on some established 1st XV and as a first year in a league setting really stepped up to deliver some excellent performances, which put us in the right position to win games.  75 players enjoyed rugby at the college.

Overall a brilliant season with lots of players been given an opportunity to play in varying levels of competition!

Cross-country

We had a a great start to the season, coming 2nd in our local races to qualify for the English Schools Cross Country Cup Finals in Leeds. Unfortuntely the Cup had to be rescheduled due to bad weather and for the second date not everyone in the team was available. Still a great results with thetop 3 runners all being in the Top 35. As most of the team is from the L6 we are hoping for a even better result next year.

Badminton

Our Badminton Team did well this year. Some ups and downs, but good performances overall and especially from our Women's Doubles. Highlight of the Season was the Silver medal for the Women's doubles Pairing of Alice Thompson and Raya Milova at the Badminton Doubles Regionals. They fought hard to get to the final and lost out in a tough final match.
